January can be tough for many businesses. Between the cold weather, post-holiday credit card bills, and fewer reasons for people to get out and about, it’s no surprise that things might feel slower than usual. But here’s the good news: it’s not too late to turn things around!

With just a bit of planning, you can create a promotion that not only fills your schedule but also sets your business up for an incredible year. This very strategy helped my salon rank as one of the 200 Fastest Growing Salons in the country for three consecutive years!

By avoiding the typical “start-of-the-year slump,” we set ourselves up for success, starting with a busy January—and you can do the same.

The Strategy: A “Winter Thank You” Promotion

  1. Create a Special Offer to Thank Your Clients
    Think of something irresistible for your clients, like:

    • 20% off their first service of the year.

    • A FREE haircut with any color service.

    • A discounted winter spa package.

    Make it feel special—something they’d regret missing!

  2. Set a Deadline.
    A firm deadline creates urgency.

    • For in-person promotions, January 31st or if you want to ensure a busy next month also, a deadline of February 28th works well.

    • For online offers, use a 24-48 hour flash sale to motivate quick action.

  3. Spread the Word.

    • Email your list. If you have one, let them know ASAP!

    • Call or text inactive clients. Reconnect with those you haven’t seen in a while. A quick, friendly “Hey, we miss you!” followed by your offer can work wonders.

    • Post it everywhere. Social Media, your website, flyers at local businesses—make sure your audience sees it. With Social Media, be sure to use local hashtags to attract those closest to you. It does you no good if someone half way across the country is excited about your offer.

    • Don't be afraid to jump into the DM's to invite your followers!

  4. Leverage Your Network.

    Ask friends, family, and loyal clients to help you spread the word.

    • Draft a simple email they can forward to their friends. Use Chat GPT, if you like.

    • Encourage them to tag you on Social Media when they share your promotion.

  5. Track Results and Celebrate!
    Watch those bookings roll in and take a moment to appreciate the momentum you’re building. You’re not just filling your January—you’re setting up a successful year ahead!

Remember: This strategy doesn’t just save your January—it can position your business for long-term success. It worked wonders for my salon, because from January and February, there was nowhere to go but up! It helped us excel faster because we didn't have to try to climb out of the typical beginning-of-the-year ‘hole'. We kicked off each year strong, and grew from there. You can do it too!
